What's Your Offering?

This sign stares at me each and every day from a bookshelf across from my desk. 

It’s a reminder that my duty is to offer myself to others, each and every day: whether it’s my family, our customers at Wild Goose, or any ministry (or book)-related conversations. 

I’ve felt God’s invitation to use my voice more this year, and I’m realizing that sometimes “using my voice” looks like being a guest on a podcast, sometimes it looks like preaching from stage at Sandals, and other times it looks like a simple conversation with customers at Wild Goose. 

I’m learning that “using my voice” entails both the “platform moments” as well as the hidden, simple conversations that we have with people everyday. And oftentimes, it’s the latter that provides the most joy and the biggest impact. 

God calls us to be faithful in all of the moments. Because the world needs who you and I were made to be.

Gideon Part 3: Your Army is Too Big

Imagine Gideon’s path—from hiding in a winepress, to getting a call to lead his country in battle, to asking for God’s confirmation, and then finally mustering troops to bear arms and fight.

32,000 men said yes to Gideon’s leadership. 32,000 were prepared to fight against Midian, for the sake of their freedom and for the freedom of their families.

32,000 men who were willing to fight 120,000 Midianites—all because Gideon had faith that God would keep His promises and give Israel victory.

If I’m Gideon, I would be tempted to go back to the winepress and ask someone else to lead. After all, who wants to take those odds when you consider the troop count?

But Gideon stays, and God speaks:

“Your army is too big.”

Achilles is more than just a Greek warrior

I’ve found I have two gods: Comfort and Productivity.

Comfort often takes the form of fun and pleasure, while Productivity is often masked as efficiency.

A few days ago, those gods were exposed in a single, painful act: while playing basketball with some friends, I felt something hit the back of my leg, just below the calf. Simultaneously, a loud sound, similar to that of a softball hitting a wooden wall, emitted from the same spot on my leg.

In mid-crumpling action, I glanced behind me to see what hit me, and when I realized nobody and nothing, was there, I immediately knew: the Achilles tendon had just ruptured.

Does God even like you?
Does God even like you?

I’m assuming I’m not the only one to have ever struggled with this question—does God love me?  Is He proud of me? 

Or when things don’t go as I would like them to—why does God dislike me so much?  If that weren’t the case, things clearly wouldn’t be like this, right??

The more days on this planet that I experience, the more I come to the conclusion that stuff happens, both good and bad, and if I allow that to dictate my view of God (or God’s view of me), I tread some dangerous waters.

 

But even though I know that intellectually, I still struggle bringing that down to the heart-level.
